ABSTRACT

In the earlier chapters of this book, we have described the separate functions along the supply chain. In the remaining chapters, we will describe the need to combine the separate functions into an integrated supply chain. Chapter 11 outlines the need to change because most organizations will have to change their internal operations as well as their relationships with customers and suppliers. Change is often difficult. In addition to changes in individual organizations, changes will also be required in communities and entire countries. Short-term fixes will have to give way to long-term program planning. As you read this company profile and the chapter in the book, think about these questions:

• Why is change difficult? Do you like change? Why or why not? • Why is mass customization important to consumers? To suppliers? • Why is it difficult for state or federal governments in the United States to change? • How should companies organize to facilitate supply chain integration?
