ABSTRACT

General approaches to optimization utilize linear, nonlinear, dynamic, and stochastic techniques, while in control theory, the calculus of variations and optimal control theory are important. Operations research is the specic branch of mathematics concerned with techniques for nding optimal solutions to decision-making problems. However, these mathematical methods are, to a large degree, theoretically oriented and thus very distant from the backgrounds of the decision makers and management personnel in industry.
