ABSTRACT
An electronic control unit (ECU), also called the powertrain control module (PCM), is a type of electronic controller equipped with one or a few microprocessors that control a series of engine or transmission actuators based upon the sensor feedbacks to ensure the optimal engine or transmission performance. Before the electronic control became available, the engine air-to-fuel ratio, ignition timing, and idle speed were dynamically controlled by mechanical and pneumatic means.
