Figure 2.1, simplistically, depicts the relationship as a triangle. The skin and the antimicrobial come together to form a unified process for killing or ridding skin surfaces of infectious microorganisms. When continuity of the skin is breached, by surgery for example, microorganisms can gain access to tissues and the bloodstream. Prior use of a topical antimicrobial reduces this risk.
