ABSTRACT

Thus far, we have taken the reader through what is big data, some of its history, the tools used, the statistical methods, an overview of data, as well as some of the advantages and disadvantages of big data. The intent was to provide a reasonably specific overview to understand where to be skeptical of breathless reporting on big data while demonstrating how big data may be a valuable contribution to an organization. Furthermore, we hope, by drawing in examples from many disciplines, we helped illustrate the way in which business, science, medicine, and other fields are facing related problems in data interpretation and analysis. Ideas created to resolve the problems of one discipline very often prove practical in other disciplines. In data analysis, as is the case with any complex phenomenon, the nuances matter. But, how does this specifically affect you?
