ABSTRACT

Potentiometry is dened by the Merriam Webster dictionary as the measurement of electromotive force by means of a potentiometer as well as the use or application of such a measurement. For chemists, potentiometry is an electroanalytical method based on gathering chemical information by measuring electrical potentials at zero current with a high-input impedance voltmeter. Accordingly, this chapter will focus on the nanoscale aspects of potentiometry applied to chemical analysis. However, it is worth mentioning that potentiometry has also other uses than providing chemical information. In fact, the term nanopotentiometry is used for a special scanning probe technique applied to the determination of local electrical potentials and the distribution of electrical potentials, for example, for characterizing electronic and optoelectronic devices.1
