ABSTRACT

Author’s Note: This chapter is about taxes, so it may be both the most important chapter in terms of staying out of trouble and the most mindnumbingly boring chapter in terms of content. Either way, the information here is meant to help you understand some of the differences between paying taxes as an employee, and paying taxes when you work for yourself. I am not a CPA (although I did have several tax specialists review all of this information to make sure it is accurate) and everyone’s situation is different. The goal though, is to provide you with some context for how taxes work when you are self-employed, and some terminology so you know what questions to ask an accountant.
