ABSTRACT

Introduction Significant advancements have occurred in our scientific knowledge and clinical application of embryo transfer in horses over the past 40 years. Future research and technique development in embryo technologies will likely be aimed at four main areas: 1) enhancing embryo recovery rate by increasing ovulation rate (i.e. superovulation), 2) improved techniques for cooled storage and cryopreservation of embryos, 3) embryo biopsy for gender determination and genetic diagnosis, and 4) production of embryos through in vitro fertilization or intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection. Continued research in mare reproductive physiology and pathology will be critical to improving embryo recovery rates in problem mares. International markets for embryos are contingent on refining techniques for cryopreservation of embryos and optimizing pregnancy rates after transfer.
