ABSTRACT

Radioactivity is a natural physical phenomenon in which unstable radioactive nuclei (radionuclides) spontaneously transform to more stable nuclei, releasing energy in the form of various radiations. Radioactivity was discovered in 1896 by Henri Becquerel (18521908) in uranium and was quickly confirmed by Marie Skłodowska-Curie (1867-1934) for radium. In 1903, Becquerel shared the Nobel Prize in Physics with Pierre and Marie Curie “in recognition of the extraordinary services he has rendered by his discovery of spontaneous radioactivity.”
