ABSTRACT

Abstract: Use of toxic and polluting chemicals in different areas of chemical processing has led to consumption of energy, generation of enormous waste water load as well as solid waste. This has resulted in either shutting down of processing industries or to shift to product and process modification or development for their survival. In recent years, introduction of low-environmental impact biotechnology has resulted in new types of treatment in the textile industry which has gained greater importance in view of stringent environmental and industrial safety norms. The best established application of biotechnology in textiles is the use of enzymes. It was learnt that enzymes were remarkably effective for pre-treatment and biopolishing of textiles. Nowadays enzymes are being successfully applied in dyeing of textiles too. This chapter consolidates the influence of various enzymes to enhance colour yield on textiles as well as change in other properties.
