ABSTRACT

Measurements may be stated in two ways: • Absolute terms: In terms that have an exact meaning,

which is the same to everyone. • Relative terms: Measurements and stated sizes

are expressed as a comparison, and the meaning is clear only to those who are able to appreciate the significance of the comparison. For example, to report that the drilling involved ‘deep’ holes conveys a different meaning, depending on whether you are talking to a site investigation driller, a water driller, or an oil driller.
