Physiological changes Pregnancy is associated with an alteration in the maternal immune system. There is a shift away from cell-mediated immunity (T-helper [Th] 1 response) to humoral immunity (Th2 response). This probably occurs to protect the fetus from immunological attack by the mother and these changes are reversed postpartum.
