ABSTRACT
The forces of electromagnetism are the second half of classical physics. Newton’s mechanics is the first half. Up to 1900, all of physics was ultimately based on Newton, gravity, and electromagnetism. Some were confident that the foundations of physics were established and only details remained. This era of confidence did not last long.
