Constructing Ear Prescriptions A fundamental premise of Oriental medical theory is to treat what one sees. By doing so the practitioner has the opportunity to address the whole patient as expressed through his or her unique energetic pattern. Although some practitioners of auricular acupuncture maintain that there is no need for either diagnosis or prescription construction, but only adherence to set formulae for specic conditions, this is generally not the Oriental medical viewpoint. Certainly however as in body acupuncture, clinical experience and/or research have revealed ear point combinations for clinical conditions. In general such points can be used as the skeletal ear formula as long as the usage of each point in that prescription can be supported and the formula modied for the particulars of the individual patient’s presentation.
