ABSTRACT

Sooner or later in one of my books we speak of the contemplative and rational type of abstract or generalized thinking, or the results of such thinking (presented in plainer English, of course). In environmental economics thinking or theorizing, we might come up with results that might explain, for example, how nature works in economic terms. Experience has shown that, in order to accomplish whatever it is that we are attempting to accomplish, we must set goals and plans-we don’t want to wind up getting somewhere where we do not want to be. Much like Alice’s statement above (“‘I don’t much care where [I end up],’ said Alice”), without a clear goal or thought-through plan we are doomed to wander aimlessly because we do not care where we end up.
