ABSTRACT
The basis of design and operation of nuclear reactors is governed by various interactions of neutrons with matter. Atomic and nuclear physics concepts are fundamental for understanding these nuclear reactions. This chapter presents the basic science behind the interaction of neutrons with atomic nuclei to understand the fast breeder reactor (FBR) concepts that would be dealt with in the subsequent chapters.
