ABSTRACT

In contrast to driving, cycling is one of the most sustainable forms of transport, and cycling offers benefits to both individual and environmental health (Jason G. Su et al., 2010, Elliot Fishman et al., 2012). However, cycling is under decline with continuous economic growth, fast motorizations, and urbanizations in most Chinese cities in recent decades. To try to reverse this tendency, many cities began to promote cycling, and thus bicycle mode choice behaviour studies have become the foundations for policymakers. Yang Chen divided the impact factors of the bicycle mode choice into individual socio-economic characteristics and trip characteristics (Yang Chen et al., 2007). Shan Xiaofeng also believed that age, job, income, and trip distance would affect people choosing the mode of the bicycle (Shan Xiaofeng et al., 2006), and Ma Pei considered bicycle facilities as a significant factor influencing the mode choice behaviour (Ma Pei et al., 2011). Thus, based on the binary logistic regression models established by using the data collected in the Economic and Technological Development Zone in Xi’an, this paper works on analysing the socio-economic and travel characteristics that will affect the cycling. In addition, the reasons for bicycle mode choice behaviour are also analysed in this paper. Policy suggestions are proposed based on the model results and data analysis, and the findings in this paper can be of reference value for the policymakers in order to promote cycling in Xi’an and other cities in China as well.
