ABSTRACT

Humanity may have to learn to detach economic growth from resource consumption, as depleting natural resources can lead us all into an untenable future. More specically, in the clothing industry, the strategy of time-based competition ushered the fashion world into the fast fashion phenomenon of disposable clothing. Cutthroat competition has led retailers’ and manufacturers’ brands into an unprecedented race to the bottom for the cheapest price and thus to the lowest standards of production. Additionally, the dispersal of subcontracting makes it difcult to monitor working condition standards and also environmental issues of production.
