ABSTRACT

Visual presentation is easily one of the most discussed topics in the character design literature. In the games industry, artists are typically charged with imagining, developing, and constructing the visual appearance of a character from concept through to nished, animated assets. is work can vary, depending on the nature of the role. For instance an art generalist might be responsible for the complete pipeline, whereas a concept artist is likely to focus on the visual design but not the production of the in-game assets. Regardless of the specic art role, all video game artists require a strong understanding of line, shape, silhouette, color, and composition. e direct connection between visual design theory and professional practice in video game art validates the prominence that character design books place on discussion of character appearance.
