ABSTRACT

Twenty-five managers gathered in the small auditorium where I had been asked to instruct them about the annual performance management process that was about to start. The organization knew that simply asking them to start the process again would not be enough: people needed a refresher course on the essentials of the process and the system in use. In addition, many new managers enter the organization each year and also need to learn about effective performance management reviews. The company had recently been taken over and had become reasonably accustomed to an American approach to performance: most managers would describe it as much tougher than it used to be.
