ABSTRACT

The work presented in this chapter is intended to demonstrate that the use of the FE model presented in Chapter 4, as complemented in Chapter 6 so as to cater for dynamic problems, is also capable, through the use of the constitutive model presented in Chapter 3, of predicting the behaviour of structural concrete under high loading rates. As the use of this model implies that the mechanical properties of concrete are independent of the rate of loading, the numerical investigation presented is also aimed at investigating the effects of the rate of loading on structural behaviour and, in doing so, to explain the causes of these effects.
