ABSTRACT
This chapter deals with design principles for clay seals and prediction of their function for isolation of waste and redirecting groundwater flow. The basis for this is modeling and calculation of the performance using laboratory-determined material properties and data from field testing, mainly concerning Temperature/hydraulic/Mechanical/ chemical (THMCB). The long-term performance of smectite seals with focus on chemical issues is discussed in Chapters 6 and 8.
