ABSTRACT
Huge mountains of digital information are being created on a daily basis. ese include diverse forms of data such as text, audio, video, and images. e proliferation of mobile devices into people’s daily lives has in fact created a data deluge. It is very surprising to note that the majority of digital data has been created only in the last two years. is is the information landscape in general. If we look at healthcare specifically, in 2012, the worldwide healthcare data was 500 petabytes. By 2020, the healthcare data are expected to multiply by 50 times and will be approximately 25,000 petabytes. e graph given below shows the amount of data generated by various industry sectors. It is clearly evident that the healthcare sector is in the forefront of data generation.
