ABSTRACT
Viruses are robust. Their architecture allows them to endure changes in their chemical environments such as temperature, ionic strength, pH, and hydration. They must be stable enough to assemble and protect their genomic cargo yet fragile enough to release that cargo in response to a subtle trigger. In many cases, release of the viral genome is accompanied by the dissociation of the virus.
