ABSTRACT

Introduction Orthopedic injuries of the distal limbs can involve muscles and tendons, ligaments and bone. Ligamentous injuries often result in significant instability of the tarsal joint or digits. Distal limb fractures that involve an articular surface require prompt and precise repair or, in severest form, arthrodesis to salvage the limb. A review of the pertinent anatomy of orthopedic structures in the distal hind limb follows. The discussion of injuries will be organized according to osseous tissues, ligament, muscle and tendon.
