ABSTRACT

The competitive, dynamic, and increasingly transparent health care landscape in the twenty-first century is motivating organizations to focus on quality and patient safety. More and more, health care organizations are assessing performance across multiple dimensions (i.e., clinical outcomes, preventive measures, patient safety events) with measures that range in complexity and accuracy (NQF “Measures Will Serve Our Future”). Moving forward, a new generation of measures must be developed and implemented to accurately and effectively assess quality across multiple dimensions and across the continuum of care. As health care becomes increasingly data-driven, the ability to develop a bundle of meaningful measures to track and drive organizational improvement will be a critical leadership function.
