ABSTRACT

The field of radiation protection is the science and practice of protecting people and the environment from the harmful effects of ionizing radiation. Ionizing radiation is widely used in industry and medicine and can present a significant health hazard if exposure is not controlled and managed. Ionizing radiation, through either external or internal exposure, can cause damage to living tissue and bones, skin burns, radiation sickness, and death at high exposure levels. Exposure to low levels of radiation is also known to statistically elevate the risk of a person developing cancer. Over the years, the study of radiation protection has evolved.
