ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the basic structure of engineers’ presentation. It offers some simple ideas and guidelines to get engineer started regardless of the purpose or content of engineers’ talk. Imagine the start and end transitions of engineers’ presentation as a pair of funnels. The introduction is used to funnel a variety of listeners into engineers’ talk. The design of engineers’ introduction depends on what engineer are trying to accomplish. A “well-designed” introduction may have several goals, but they all come down to preparing an audience to receive engineers’ information. Preparing the meat of engineers’ presentation obviously requires the most thought and the most work. As with engineers’ introduction and conclusion, the design of engineers’ main body depends on what engineer are trying to accomplish. The structure of engineers’ introduction, or engineers’ approach in delivering it, may also take many forms.
