ABSTRACT

Engineers' presentation will only be as strong as its weakest link. This chapter provides some pointers about the diverse aspects of presentation quality. Crucial among the building blocks of any technical presentation are the words the speaker uses and how they are connected together. A technical presentation is not the time or place for sloppy diction. Informal terminology, slang, cute spelling, and internet jargon are not appropriate in a formal presentation, unless specifically relevant to the topic under consideration. As a component of Engineers' designed presentation, a particular slide should have a definite purpose. Engineers often convey information through diagrams, graphs, and tables. The key difference between using the items in a presentation versus a written document is the time the user has available to glean information. Poster presentations are common at conferences and review meetings. The speaker is usually expected to stand beside a large visual aid and interact one-on-one with interested viewers.
