ABSTRACT
Immersion in cold water may result in a variety of adverse events. In some cases, the exposure may be rapidly fatal as a result of cold shock. Victims who survive this period may not be able to rescue themselves because of a loss of motor power. Prolonged exposure raises the possibility of progressive hypothermia, which can be exacerbated during time spent above water in exposed environments.
