ABSTRACT

Here and in the following we will consider species as it was defi ned in Chapter 7 or according to the Biological Species Concept (BSC). The species in the BSC is most naturally supported by population genetic theory, and that is why we prefer this concept despite the limitations, which were outlined earlier (Chapter 7). Populations that form

such a species may be defi ned in genetic terms, and we will learn some fundamental qualities of these populations in this chapter and the next.
