ABSTRACT

Death scene investigation is an overarching term that describes the investigatory nature of exploring why someone died. Crime scene investigation in homicide cases is part of that process. ere is a gap between the medical and law enforcement communities when it comes to death investigation and homicide investigation. is book is an attempt to help bridge that gap in that death investigation for these purposes not only includes the medical examination of the deceased victim, but also encapsulates all aspects of the investigation in relation to how the victim died in totality. So for all intents and purposes here, death investigation and homicide investigation are the same, but it is important to remember that generally speaking not all death scenes are crime scenes and not all crime scenes are death scenes, just like not all homicides are murders in the eld of forensic pathology. However, the author would argue that any suspicious death should be thoroughly investigated as if it were a murder in the event it turns out that it is a murder.
