ABSTRACT
Cornell University owes its existence to the fortune of New York State Senator Ezra Cornell and the academic vision of Senator Andrew Dickson White (Figure 9.1). It opened its doors to students in 1867 as the New York State Land Grant College. A.D. White was its first president. He envisioned a school where a scientific and technical education would be married with studies in history and literature.
