ABSTRACT

One of the other leading centers of polymer science in the United States was at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Richard Stein founded this effort in the early 1950s and it has thrived ever since. One of the best theoretical students ever to work for Dick Stein was Do Y. Yoon (Figure 13.1), and he chose to accept a postdoctoral fellowship with Flory. Not only was this joint effort fruitful, but when Yoon joined IBM Research, San Jose, a long-term collaboration was established. Elegant work in the theory of chain-vector distributions appeared almost immediately.74 Treatments of advanced methods, such as x-ray and neutron scattering, for the analysis of polymer chain conformation were also presented.75,76 In 1999, after 24 years of an IBM research career, Yoon moved to his alma mater as a full professor in the chemistry department of Seoul National University, Korea and upon retirement in 2012, returned to United States as a consulting professor of chemical engineering in Stanford University. A detailed personal narrative is included below.
