ABSTRACT

Writing is an essential part of a research project. It is through your writing that you communicate the ndings from your research. The nal report in an undergraduate programme is usually called the ‘Final Year Project Report’ (FYP report) and that in a postgraduate programme is referred to as the thesis or dissertation. In this book, we will use the term report to signify the end report of an undergraduate research project and thesis to refer to the end report of a postgraduate research project. In a postgraduate programme, there may also be interim reports and academic papers to write before the thesis is submitted. The report or thesis, however, is probably the longest piece of writing that you will be required to do in your university studies. Whether you are writing a report or thesis, it is the basis on which the value of your work is judged as well as the basis on which your grade or degree is awarded.
