ABSTRACT
The following case is based on a true account, as are most exemplars in this book. The names and locations are sometimes changed to protect the innocence and anonymity of the participants. We picked this case because it demonstrates a failure of virtuous and discretionary policing, as well as the huge and ever-widening gap between the police, the criminal justice system, and the population they are both supposed to serve. It is a prime example of a zero-tolerance policy misapplied and gone awry. It also demonstrates a gross incompetency of a legal system as it relates to individuals’ inherent right to defend themselves against imminent threats of grievous bodily injury or death in our blighted urban areas.
