ABSTRACT

In the early 1990s, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) began studying methods of using the then-new supercomputers, like the Cray systems, to perform link analysis of telephone numbers dialed by suspected foreign threats (in the vernacular, spies) and terrorists. Link analysis identifies association among known and unknown individuals and then creates a link chart for the user’s easy visualization and comprehension. Intelligence analysts can then review network charts to discern patterns of interest (Figure 17.1).
