ABSTRACT
Sustainability has become a legacy for the twenty-first century. It embodies the promise of societal evolution toward a more equitable and richer world in which the natural environment is preserved for generations to come. The quest for economic growth and social equity has become a major goal for most of the past 150 years. By adding concern for the carrying capacity of natural systems, sustainability ties together the current main challenges facing humanity.
