ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses solely on the recruitment of informants who are detained in police custody following their arrest. All the subjects of the research were informants I handled when I was a detective in counterterrorism and forms part of wider research covering the recruitment and handling of informants in counterterrorism investigations. Due to the research revealing various tactics used by police officers, this work focuses solely on the recruitment of informants who are suspects in police detention. Twenty-one subjects were interviewed in the research and they were informants who are no longer active. Using semi-structured interviews, they were asked questions regarding their methods of recruitment, why they decided to inform and how they felt during the recruitment process. These topic areas produced some illuminating data regarding the recruitment of informants.
