ABSTRACT

Arguably, binding is the fundamental molecular process of biology. Almost all communication among cells andwithin cells (signaling) results from binding ormolecular recognition. Those arrows you may see in cell-biology figures-connecting proteins in a network or even connecting genes-result from binding. After all, genes are regulated largely by binding events, such as transcription factors to DNA (plus many other examples involving RNA, siRNA, histones, etc.). Even catalysis, which might be considered a distinct process, relies on binding of substrate to enzyme before it can even get started.
