ABSTRACT

Probability theory is at the heart of somuch of science. Youwill use it every day, either explicitly or tacitly, and whether you perform experiments or calculations. (The end of this chapter highlights a famous experimental paper published in Science, which makes fundamental use of statistical theory.) But beyond being practically useful, probability theory is a way of understanding nearly the whole fields of biophysics and computational biology. It is a fundamental theoretical foundation and perspective, not just a collection of mathematical techniques.
