ABSTRACT

ANDERSON A.G. 21.04. 1911 Duluth MN/USA 01.07. 1975 New Brunswick NJ/USA Alvin George Anderson received three university degrees from Minnesota University, BCE in 1933, MS CE in 1935 and the PhD in 1950. He spent his early years with the Soil Conservation Service SCS of the US Department of Agriculture, where he did research on sediment transport in natural streams. He left in 1943 to join the Army, being associated with research on antisubmarine weapons. Returning to University of Minnesota, initially as instructor, he was appointed full professor of civil engineering in 1959, and named director of the St. Anthony Falls Hydraulic Laboratory in 1974. He died only 1 year later following a heart attack suffered while attending a symposium of the American Water Resources Association AWRA at Rutgers University, New Brunswick NJ. Anderson combined his love for teaching and interest in students with an active research program. In addition to sediment transport, he was also active in research in such areas as flow in bends, culvert hydraulics, air entrainment by high-velocity flow, or hydraulic structures. He was further active as a consultant for both national and international projects. He also took interest in professional associations, including the International Association for Hydraulic Research IAHR, the American Society of Civil Engineers ASCE, or AWRA. He was the recipient of the 1961 ASCE Norman Medal for the benchmark paper Self-aerated flow, co-authored by Lorenz G. Straub (1901-1963), and the 1965 ASCE J.C. Stevens Award for discussing Sediment transportation mechanics. Anderson, A.G. (1953). The characteristics of sediment waves formed by flow in open channels. Proc. 3rd Midwestern Conf.
