ABSTRACT
JANSEN R.B. 14.12. 1922 Spokane WA/USA 14.12. 2011 Mead WA/USA Robert Bruce Jansen obtained the BS degree from University of Denver in 1949, and the MS degree from University of Southern California, Los Angeles CA, in 1955. He was then a professional engineer in the West, from 1965 to 1968 chief of the California Division of Dam Safety, Sacramento CA, and until 1971 chief of operations, California Department of Water Resources, then its departmental director and its chief of design and construction until 1977. From then to 1980 Jansen was assistant commissioner of the US Bureau of Reclamation USBR, Denver CO, when becoming a consulting engineer at Bellingham WA. He was in charge of Tennessee Valley Authority TVA, Hydro-Quebec, Montreal, Canada, or the Alabama Power Co., Birmingham AL. Jansen has authored and edited a number of important works. His 1951 paper deals with backwater curves in the pre-computer era. In contrast to other methods he made direct use of the governing differential equation in terms of free surface slope. He later edited the book Advanced dam engineering, a work summarizing recent techniques in dam engineering. The book includes 26 chapters, of which the main hydraulic interest is in earthfill dams, rockfill dams, gravity dams, arch dams, spillway design and construction, spillway performance and remedial measures, outlet design and construction, and also reservoirs. Other works are Dams and public safety, an important issue in hydro-electric schemes for the future, or Safety of existing dams, corresponding to a reassessment of the by then completed installations.
