ABSTRACT

KING H.W. 10.02. 1874 Big Rapids MI/USA 22.04. 1951 Pasadena CA/USA Horace Williams King obtained his BS degree in civil engineering from University of Michigan, Ann Arbor MI in 1895. He was until 1898 city engineer of Big Rapids MI and then employed by the Isthmian Canal in charge of field works in Nicaragua until 1901. During 1902 King was assistant engineer for harbour works at Manila PH, and in 1903 resident engineer at Canton, China. Upon return to the USA he joined as engineer the US Reclamation Service in charge of works for the Umatilla Dam project in Oregon until 1909, from when he was a hydraulic engineer of a private consultant. King was appointed in 1912 professor of hydraulic engineering at University of Michigan, a position he held until his retirement in 1939. In parallel he also was a private consultant at Ann Arbor. King is known for his Handbook of hydraulics, published in 1918 and revised in 1928. This was a standard reference of American hydraulic engineers for decades. The main book chapters include Hydrostatics, Orifices, Weirs, Pipe flow, and Open channel flow. He also was an associate editor of the American Civil Engineers’ Handbook published in 1920 and revised in 1930, authoring chapters on Irrigation and drainage, and solution of the Manning formula for pipes. He advocated this formula as a substitute to that of Wilhelm Kutter (1818-1888) for both pipe and open channel flows. At this time, the formula of Robert Manning (1816-1897) was practically unknown in the USA but then almost universally adopted throughout the country. King was member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, elected to Honorary Member ASCE in 1945. Anonymous (1941). King, Horace W. Who’s who in engineering 5: 980. Lewis: New York.
