MERRIMAN T. 06.04. 1876 New Haven CT/USA 26.09. 1939 New York NY/USA Thaddeus Merriman, son of Mansfield, graduated as a civil engineer from Lehigh University, Bethlehem PA, in 1897, there obtaining in 1930 the honorary PhD degree. He was from 1897 to 1899 draftsman on surveys in Nicaragua in charge of the US Canal Commission, then until 1900 assistant engineer of the US Isthmian Canal Commission, designer of the filtration plant for the Jersey Water Co. upon return until 1901, assistant engineer for the masonry dam of Boonton NJ until 1905, and from 1907 to 1918 assistant to the chief engineer for Ashokan Reservoir NY, continuing until retirement as deputy chief and chief engineer mainly for the Catskill Water System. He also was chairman of the Engineering Board of Review, Metropolitan Water District of South California for the 400 km long aqueduct from Colorado River to Los Angeles. He further was a Lecturer in hydraulics and water supply engineering at Lehigh University. Merriman was known for his editorship of the American civil engineers’ handbook, a work in collaboration with his father. He also published with his father the Treatise on hydraulics. From 1923 to 1927 he led negotiations with the States of Pennsylvania and New Jersey looking toward allocation of waters from Delaware River. In 1927 he prepared a plan for the development of 540 million gallons water daily for New York City from the Rondout and Delaware areas. He was from 1933 to 1936 a consultant engineer of the Board of Water Supply for New York City. He was director of the American Society of Civil Engineers ASCE, of the Franklin Institute, of the New England Water Works Association, and the American Water Works Association. Anonymous (1922).
