ABSTRACT

NEALE 23.09. 1918 Wayland MA/USA 24.10. 1984 St. Louis MO/USA Lawrence Carlton Neale obtained in 1940 the BS degree from Worcester Polytechnic, Worcester MA, and graduated with an MS in 1957. He was from 1940 to 1950 instructor of mechanical engineering at his Alma Mater and there was associate professor of hydraulic engineering from 1958, taking over in 1965 as professor of mechanical engineering. He served in parallel as assistant director and later as director of Alden Hydraulic Research Laboratory, Worcester University, until 1975. He was member and Fellow, the American Society of Civil Engineers ASCE, and member of both the American Society of Mechanical Engineers ASME, and the International Association of Hydraulic Research IAHR. Neale passed away during a stay on St. Louis airport at age 66. The research interests of Neale included hydraulic research in general, drag tests, smoke dispersion tests using model power plants, the missile development in water entry area, and salt velocity tests. He was attracted by the Alden Hydraulic Laboratory, given the practical background. Charles M. Allen (1871-1950), the founder of this institution, designed a so-called ‘rotating boom’ instead of a towing tank for calibrating velocity meters, given the reduced cost for construction, allowance for longer testing duration, and larger objects because boundary layer effects from the channel side walls were absent. The facility was used for current meter ratings, for studying aircraft propellers, ship logs, Pitot tubes, and Darrieus water turbines, as introduced by the Frenchman George Darrieus (1888-1979). Neale attempted to perfect the hydraulic techniques of the Alden Lab. He was awarded the 1954 Freeman Scholarship for an inspection tour of European hydraulic laboratories. He visited 64 sites in the UK, France, Switzerland, Italy, Austria, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Norway, reporting impressions in the 1957 paper. Anonymous (1955). L.C. Neale.
