ABSTRACT

POST J.C. 30.07. 1844 Newbury NY/USA 06.01. 1896 New York NY/USA James Clarence Post entered in 1861 the US Military Academy at West Point NY, and on graduation four years later was appointed second lieutenant, and transferred to the Corps of Engineers, with which he was connected until his death. After his service as assistant engineer for improving government works in New England, he became assistant professor of mathematics at West Point, where he remained for four years. The next three years were spent with the engineer battalion at Willet’s Point NY. He was promoted in 1871 to captain. From 1874 to 1882 he was assistant engineer, from when he was in charge of river improvements in several states. He was again promoted in 1886 to major. Post was transferred in 1887 to Washington DC as assistant to the Chief of Engineers, and in 1889 became Military Attaché to the US Legation in London UK. In 1891 he was a delegate to the Geographical Congress at Bern, Switzerland, and in 1893 attended the Permanent International Maritime Congress in London. Shortly before he had married there an English lady, with whom he had a son. Major Post was from 1894 to 1895 in charge of important works in the Northwest. The large jetty at the mouth of Columbus River was completed under his supervision, but his work was in danger during a great flood in 1894, when the Cascades Canal had a serious injury. During this time he was also in charge of the construction and equipment of a boat railway from the foot of the Dallas Rapids to the head of Celilo Falls, and of many river and harbour works. He also served as board member on bridge construction and river and harbour improvements, and was in supervisory charge of the construction of bridges across various streams. In 1896 he was relieved from the duty at Portland OR to take over new duties at Detroit, when he died. He was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers ASCE. Anonymous (1896).
