ABSTRACT

REED 05.03. 1896 St. Paul IN/USA 29.10. 1953 Kingsport TN/USA Oren Reed obtained in 1922 the BSc degree in civil engineering from Purdue University, Lafayette IN, and later also studied in Norway. He was in 1923 employed as assistant engineer on the hydro-electric power development for the San Joaquin Light and Power Corporation, Fresno CA; he was then sent to Germany as an inspector of steel pipes. Upon return he joined in 1934 the Tennessee Valley Authority TVA, Knoxville TN, where he was involved in its projects for the Pickwick Dam, the Hales Bar Dam, the Watts Bar Dam, Fontana Dam, and the Watauga Dam. He was in 1950 transferred as construction engineer to the Widows Creek Steam Plant, Stevenson AL. Reed was member of the American Society of Civil Engineers ASCE from 1936. Reed made in 1946 several reports on the hydro-electric potential of Brazil, which was however only fully appreciated from the 1960s. He attended in 1951 the World Power Conference at Stockholm, Sweden, and then studied the hydro-electric developments in Europe. He was a frequent contributor to technical journals dealing with hydro-power engineering. The Watauga Dam, on which Reed had been associated, is a hydro-electric and flood control dam on the Watauga River TN, both owned and operated by TVA. The dam was built in the 1940s, its height is 100 m and thus the second highest of all TVA dams behind Fontana Dam. Watauga Dam impounds 26 km2. It is controlled by a morning glory spillway of 2,000 m3/s discharge capacity, one of the very first of these elegant hydraulic structures. Fontana Dam is on the Little Tennessee River, built in the early 1940s to accommodate the skyrocketing electricity demands in Tennessee Valley during World War II. With 150 m height, it is the tallest dam in the eastern USA, and it was the fourth tallest dam of the world at the time of construction. Anonymous (1955). Oren Reed. Trans. ASCE 120: 1574-1575.
