ABSTRACT

SCHULEEN E.P. 25.10. 1897 Sioux City IA/USA 15.03. 1975 Allegheny PA/USA Emil Philip Schuleen obtained the BS degree from State University of Iowa, Iowa City IA in 1926, and there the MS degree in engineering in 1927. He was then a hydrological assistant involved in the hydropower plant operation and maintenance at Keokuk IA for the Mississippi River Power Company until 1929, becoming until 1937 an associate engineer for flood control investigations and model tests. Until 1942 he was a senior engineer for investigations on navigation, flood control, hydro-electric power, and pollution abatement for the Upper Ohio River Basin. He was later concerned with the maintenance and operation of eight flood control and multi-purpose reservoirs until 1945, from when he prepared hydrologic studies, reservoir operation reports, hydraulic research and design for a variety of schemes. He was in charge of all engineering investigations, planning and design for navigation, flood control and multi-purpose projects of the Pittsburgh District of the US Corps of Engineers since 1951. Schuleen was a typical hydraulic engineer during the Golden Years of hydropower development. He published few papers but submitted discussions to research journals of which he was interested, including on questions in hydrology such as the concept of the maximum probable flood, or model tests of hydraulic structures, or even the rainfall characteristics in the South of the USA. He published with a colleague a notable and one of the very first papers on cavitation damage in hydraulic engineering during the Cavitation Symposium in the early 1940s, for which he was awarded the 1943 Karl Emil Hilgard Prize from the American Society of Civil Engineers ASCE.
