ABSTRACT

TOFFALETI 25.10. 1906 Hillsborough FL/USA 05.04. 1982 Vicksburg MS/USA Few is known on the education of Fred B. Toffaleti, He joined in any case the US Corps of Engineers of which he acted in 1960 as chief of the Hydraulic Model and Sedimentation Section, and in the late 1960s headed the US Army Engineering Division of the Lower Mississippi Valley. He was a member of the Mississippi River Commission, Vicksburg MS. The 1963 paper reports a large number of velocity data collected at Atchafalaya River, Simmesport LA, and in the Mississippi River at Vicksburg MS, to define the vertical velocity distribution. These data indicate that the distributions of the two rivers are almost identical at the respective locations. However, a comparison with the standard formula derived from analytical sedimentation studies indicated a quite different result. Suspended sediment data were also collected indicating that the silt and clay portions were satisfactorily measured with a standard approach. The 1969 paper introduces the Toffaleti equation, corresponding to a procedure for the analytical determination of sand transport in rivers. His formulation was particularly adaptable to computational schemes. It was tested from small to large rivers, under the full range of flow conditions, and verified in the flume experiments conducted under widely-varied flow conditions whose beds also involved a large degree of variability. van Rijn in his famous 1984 paper series states that the Toffaleti approach is the best to deal with this problem. Nakato in 1990 found that the Toffaleti formula for sediment discharge computations performed well for all flow events investigated. Rouse, H. (1976). F.B. Toffaleti.
